Is same sex marriage a civil right?
First of all, marriage is not a basic human right.  A basic human right is one that has to be granted to any human being at any time of his/her life, like the right to live.  Marriage is not one of these rights.  Two children cannot get married.  A father cannot marry his daughter.  Four people cannot cross marry each other.  Similarly, the majority of Americans believe two adults of the same sex should not be allowed to marry.  The institution of marriage is a very narrowly defined term reserved for two un-related adults of opposite sex committed to loyal life-long loving and caring, pro-creating children, and raising them to follow a father-mother pattern family.

Civil rights are to assure people of different races get the same protection under law.  Race is an unchangeable human trait, defined by DNA and observable at birth.  Homosexuality is a "sexual feeling", or a "sexual preference", which can change.  It is not hardwired by DNA, and is not observable at birth.  With whom you want to have sex with should not be classified as a civil right.  If a "sexual feeling" is categorized as a civil right, then should we not include the following "sexual feelings" or "sexual preferences" under the protective umbrella of civil rights:
Pedophilia?
Incest?
     Polygamy?
If homosexuality is classified as a "sexual minority" and their union qualifies for protection under civil right, then why not other "sexual minorities" like pedophilia, incest and polygamy?  Excluding them would only mean discrimination.

One can argue that now homosexuality is legal but the other relationships are not.  This argument cannot be used because once upon a time homosexual behavior was not legal in America.  If the moral standard of America evolves into legalizing incest, does that also mean America should also allow a mother to marry her son under a redefined civil rights umbrella?  Hence, expanding the meaning of civil rights from race to sexuality is simply irrational and dangerous.

Having a certain "sexual feeling" does not mean one needs to be governed by it.  We are human beings and we can decide not to act on sexual drives or feelings.  This is the basis of all moral behaviors and all civilized societies. Legalizing a sexually behavior by putting it into the category of a civil right, distorts the noble purpose of civil rights.
